Isaiah 9:6, 7
In the run up to Christmas, lots of effort will be put into selecting the most appropriate gifts for the people we love. What they need, what they like, what will make them happy, something we’ve wanted to see them with for a long time, and yes, our own economic status (can we afford it) will come into play. Receiving a much-desired or needed item is a great thing; being the giver of a treasure like that is also a thrill. We love to please those we love!
Isaiah the prophet, writing many, many years before Jesus’ physical birth, wrote descriptively and majestically about God’s planned gift to us in 9:6-7. Just consider the titles given to Christ in verse 6 and the rich implication for us:
Wonderful Counselor – a planner who shares His wisdom with those who follow Him. His plans? Jeremiah stated it this way to God’s Old Testament people- “’For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope’” (Jeremiah 29:11). We are the fruit of that hope, living for Christ, guided by the Word and taught by the Spirit. We are called to make disciples for Jesus and live a life of service.
Mighty God – a title reflecting the might of a warrior and skill in battle (Psalm 24:8). A title God used to describe Himself while exemplifying mercy and love toward others (Deuteronomy 10:17, 18). We can rely on Him to fight for us as we engage in spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:10-20).
Everlasting Father – A protector and provider who cares for His family. One who is committed and will give us His best for each circumstance, while growing us toward maturity (Romans 8:31-39). The perfect example and teacher, comparable to no other.
Prince of Peace – Jesus promises His peace- and teaches us in the Word how to access it (Philippians 4:6-9). Jesus’ peace is a beautiful gift (John 14:27) with responsibility placed on us to invest our faith (“do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful;” “dwell on these things”). We can have peace during troubled circumstance.
Jesus- the perfect gift from the Giver of all perfect things (James 1:17). Praise God for His love for us!
