1 John 5:4-5
Nike is a brand of running shoe that has been popular for many years. Nike was the Greek goddess of victory. If you’re a competitive runner, the Greek term nike should be of interest to you. It means “the means of success, victory.” Every serious runner who starts a race has that idea in mind- to thoroughly defeat all the competitors!
John wrote about our faith being that through which we would have the means (nike) to have victory over the world. Other related forms of the word are used to indicate overcoming, conquering, prevailing in a struggle.
This world is our arena of spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:10-17 emphasizes areas of preparation we should apply ourselves to, relating them to items of equipment that a soldier would have used in that day. Faith is mentioned in verse 16 as being that with which we can “extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” Whatever discouragement, problem, crisis, or seemingly insurmountable odds Satan thinks he can hurl against us, faith is enough to bring us through (2 Corinthians 5:7). The battle may be hard, but what we gain from the victory will build us into what God wants us to be (James 1:2-4). Ultimate victory is when we go to heaven to spend eternity with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:4-9).
Faith is primary to our restoration to fellowship with God. It is the beginning point of salvation (Acts 8:35-38) and is the mode in which we live to serve God (Hebrews 10:36-39). Real faith is a thing that is seen in the actions we take (James 2:14-17, 26). And faith offers us assurance that the things of real value, the promises of God, are true for us regardless of the circumstances swirling around us (Hebrews 11:1).
The Devil is a malicious enemy. The world is a place of imperfection and difficulty. It is fallen and tends to oppose everything the Lord teaches in His Word. We are offered a tool to give us victory over the bad attitudes and evil actions that seek to defeat us. Cling to your faith and plant it firmly in a God who loves you. Take the Scriptures as your road map and be encouraged by them. Become an encourager to other believers who may be staggering under their load. We have every reason to expect victory!
